Another thing I don’t understand is that this slot contains 40 paylines rather than 60. Yet the line bet is the same as the coin size. So I’m wondering what happens with the other 20 coins each bet costs you.

Lucky Larry’s Lobstermania Symbols

Be prepared to see a lot of different symbols on the reels. There are 10 regular symbols, two wild symbols, and a bonus scatter symbol.

Regular symbols

The two highest paying regular symbols are a buoy and a fishing boat. Either one pays 400 coins for five across a payline. Next in order of value are the lighthouse and boathouse. Five matching symbols of either of those across a payline will return 300 coins. Rounding out the regular symbols at the low end are the playing cards 8 through K.

Winning combinations are formed in the usual manner. You need at least three matching symbols to line up adjacently on consecutive reels starting with reel 1. However, the payout for three of a kind is tiny–only a small fraction of your bet size.

Special symbols

You can’t count on the regular symbols alone to stay afloat in this game. But fortunately, there are multiple special symbols to save the day.

Wild symbols

The second “s” is not a typo. Most slots have one wild symbol, but in this game, lucky you gets to play with three wild symbols.

Two of the wild symbols look similar, as both contain the Lobstermania 2 logo. But one has an orange background, and the other has a blue background. Either symbol can be stacked.

The wild symbol with the orange background is the more valuable of the two. It is capable of substituting for any other symbol except the bonus symbol to help form or add to winning combinations. The wild symbol with the blue background, on the other hand, can substitute for all other symbols except the bonus symbol and the wild symbol with the orange background.

In addition, when either of these wild symbols form a winning combination by themselves, they are the game’s highest paying symbol. Five wild symbols with an orange background across a payline will pay out a whopping 8,000 coins, while five wild symbols with a blue background across a payline will return a still very satisfying 1,000 coins. The payout for four in a row of either symbol is 200 coins, and for three in a row, it is 50 coins.

The third type of symbol with wild potential is any symbol except the bonus symbol with the word “Jackpot” above it. This symbol can only appear in the base game. If three or more of them appear simultaneously anywhere on the reels, they substitute for their respective symbols and as such may create additional winning combinations. If three or more symbols with the word “Jackpot” appear consecutively across the payline, you also win a jackpot (see below).

Bonus scatter symbol

The bonus symbol is Lucky Larry himself with outstretched arms that look like lobster claws and the words “Lobstermania 2.”

Three, four, or five bonus symbols anywhere on the reels will award you immediately with 40x to 95x the coin value of the triggering spin. You also trigger the bonus pick where you get to choose between two extremely lucrative bonus features (see below).

On any spin in the base game, a 5x multiplier can appear over a Buoy, Boat, Lighthouse, or Boathouse symbol. Or a 3x multiplier can appear over a Buoy, Boat or Lighthouse .

However, the multiplier symbol can only appear on reel 3. The multiplier is applied to your line winnings for the applicable spin.

Free spins bonus

If you’re lucky enough to have three or more bonus scatter symbols land simultaneously, you trigger the bonus pick. If you choose the free spins bonus, you will be awarded five free spins on “extra rich reels.”

Even though the free spins don’t offer a jackpot, stacked wilds galore compensate nicely and can contribute to mega-size wins. Playing in demo mode at a hypothetical $60/per spin, I won $4,590.

But you can do even better because the five free spins can be retriggered multiple times (for up to 240 free spins) if three or more bonus symbols land simultaneously again.

Alternatively, you can choose Lucky Larry’s Buoy Bonus 2. But before the fun begins, you need to make another tough choice: the location where you want your search for the Golden Lobster and other lucrative rewards to take place: Australia, Brazil, or Maine.

After you decide, you get to pick 2-4 buoys. Each buoy contains 2-4 lobsters that could award either anywhere from 10x to 575x the coin value of the triggering spin or the Golden Lobster.

If you pick the Golden Lobster, depending on whether you’re in Australia, Brazil, or Maine, you then move on to the Kangaroo, Octopus, or Pelican bonus round, respectively.

I chose Lucky Larry’s Buoy Bonus 2 with Australia as my location in another playing session in demo mode at $60 per spin. After triggering the Kangaroo bonus as well, the two bonuses combined produced a total win of $3,388 (less the $425 I was down before in the base game).

The bottom line

I would be remiss if I didn’t also mention that in one of my three playing sessions in demo mode, I tapped out.

Introduction

In my continued effort to lift the veil of secrecy behind slot machines, I present the following analysis of the IGT game Lucky Larry's Lobstermania. The information regarding the design of this game is taken from the academic paper PAR Sheets, probabilities, and slot machine play: Implications for problem and non-problem gambling by Kevin A. Harrigan and Mike Dixon, University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.

The authors of the paper obtained par sheets for the game through the Canadian Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. I applaud the government of Canada for this release. The purpose of this page is to further the analysis of Lobstermania beyond what was presented in the Harrigan and Dixon paper.

It should be noted there are other versions of Lobstermania besides this one. As far as I can tell they differ by small changes to the pay table and details of the bonus round.

Reel Strips

Harrigan and Dixon give the symbol distribution for two Lobstermania par sheets, one for 85.0% and the other for 96.2%. Both are presented below. Notice how the 96.2% version has more high-paying symbols and that any given symbol is distributed more uniformly across the 5 reels. To illustrate that the distribution is more choppy in the 85.0% version, notice that the number of clams per reel on the 85.0% version is 10,8,3,4,7. On the 96.2%, the distribution is 6-6-5-6-6. However, the number of key symbols (wild, scatter and bonus) are the same in both games.

Harrigan and Dixon do not indicate the exact reel stripping. However, as long as the scatter symbols are not so close on the same reel that they can appear at the same time, the symbol order does not matter for this game, as well as for most video slots. The following reel stripping is hypothetical, based on the 85.0% version.

The way the game would work would be to choose 5 random numbers, one for each reel, and map each random number to a position on the corresponding reel. For example, for reel 1 the game would draw a number from 1 to 47. For example, suppose this number were mapped to the symbol in the top row. If the random number for reel 1 were 37, then the symbols shown on reel 1 would be a Clam on top row, a Star Fish in the middle row, and a Boat on bottom row.

The next table shows the Lobstermania pay table. All wins must be left aligned. The wild symbol can substitute for any line-pay symbol.

There are 47 × 46 × 48 × 50 × 50 = 259,440,000 possible outcomes in Lobstermania. The following table shows how many of these combinations result in each possible win. These figures are the result of a program with five nested loops that tallied the total for each win for each possible combination.

The next table shows the probability of each possible win. This is the number of winning combinations for that win, shown in the table above, divided by the total number of combinations of 259,440,000. The total in the lower right cell reflects a hit frequency per line (probability of winning anything) of 3.25%.

Scatter Pay

The player gets credit for a 'scatter pay' symbol if it appears anywhere on the screen. Scatter pay wins are based on the total amount bet. The following table shows the number of scatters per reel, total symbols per reel, and the probability of a scatter on that reel, which is 3×(column 2)/(column 3). The reason for multiplying by 3 is there are three visible positions on each reel.

The next table shows the probability and contribution to the return for 0 to 5 total scatter symbols. The lower right cell shows that the scatter pay feature returns 10.65% to the return of the game.

Bonus

The player earns the bonus if he gets the bonus symbol on reels 1, 2 and 3 on any active pay line. The following table shows the probability of getting the bonus symbol on each of the first three reels. The lower right cell shows the probability of activating the bonus on any active pay line is 0.06%, or 1 in 1,730. If the player plays the maximum 15 pay lines, then the bonus probability per spin is 0.87%, or 1 in 115.

There are three parts to the bonus game, as follows:

• Number of lobster traps.
• Number of lobsters per trap.
• Size/win of each lobster.

There are three possibilities for the number of lobster traps, 2, 3 and 4, each with equal probability. Thus, the expected number of traps is 3.

There are two possibilities for the number of lobsters per trap, 2 or 3, each with equal probability. Thus, the expected number of lobsters per trap is 2.5.

The prize per lobster can be anywhere from 5 to 250. Each prize has an associated weighting, as shown in the table below. The way the game might work is it would pick an integer from 1 to 322 and map it to a weight according to this table. The bottom right cell shows an average win of 44.02 per lobster.
